Raff Angus Bull Sale Monday September 21st.

After a five-year absence from an auction sale we return this September with 45 rising two-year-old bulls. Since our re-location south we have continued with bull sales by selling privately in the paddock.

Both new and loyal clients have supported us over these past years however we were aware that some would find it simply too difficult purchasing off King Island. In making this decision we were mindful of the current global difficulties and travel restrictions current and potential.

Raff Angus bulls for saleRaff Angus Bulls sell September 21st, 2020 …

This year will see the return of Raff Angus to having a spring bull sale.

Early July all of our spring sale bull group were trucked to mainland to friends and fellow Angus Stud breeders Kate and Murk Schoen of Schoen Pastoral ‘Aarden’ located at COROWA NSW. The group of 45 rising two-year-old bulls will run in a rye grass and clover paddock maintaining their 100% pasture raised status.

Following our move from Queensland to King Island 5 years ago we have been selling bulls privately while building our numbers and adjusting to the contrasting management and environmental variances.

After a five-year absence from public auction sales we now return with our Raff Angus ‘Pedigrees with a difference’ Bull Sale on Monday 21 September 2020.This sale will occur on the Elite Livestock Live In-room Online Auction platform. Inspection days are to occur several days before sale - Friday 11th September - or by prior arrangement if required.

Pre-sale photos and videos with all pedigree information will be available in an online catalogue. These bulls will all be DNA Sire Verified and Genomic tested. Each bull has also been ear notched tested free for Pesti-virus. Their Ultrasound Scanning information, weights and frame score data will be available early August. Vaccinations of 7in1, Pestiguard and Tick Fever have occurred. All bulls will have been Breeding Soundness evaluated. Go to SALES page for more information…

Raff Angus stud females produce best weight gain progeny for a pen of six grain-fed steers (370 days) in the 2020 RNA Paddock to Palate Wagyu Challenge Competition.

The RNA Paddock to Palate competition may be the nation's richest beef competition of its kind, but for many entrants it's about more than the prize money up for grabs. Commercial and stud producers alike continue to enter the prestigious event as a way to benchmark their operations against other producers.

Jamie Sturrock, Austpec Pastoral general manager - Drillham Queensland, was delighted when their pen of Wagyu steers from Raff Angus females took out best weight gain for a pen of six grain-fed steers (370 days) in the 2020 RNA Paddock to Palate Wagyu Challenge Competition. They recorded an average daily weight gain of 1.239 kilograms.

They also claimed the highest individual weight gain with an ADG of 1.39kg. Austpec Pastoral started five years ago with the purchase of the Raff Family’s property “Mundibulanga” in 2015. They also purchased near 100 of the Raff Angus stud cows with heifer calves at foot. These steers were produced from those cows.

Raff AngusRaff bred steers top Dalby Feeder and Store Challenge sale

A tidy draft of eleven steers from Ben and Karen Usher made top money at the recent Dalby Feeder and Store Challenge sale in south east Queensland.

After more than twelve months of severe drought, weeks on end of carting water and day after day of droving their cattle on public roads the Usher family were rewarded for the perseverance when their 447kg milk and two tooth steers sold for 452 cents/kg to return $2,023/hd. Located near Warwick Ben has been a loyal client to the Raff program having purchased their first bull in 2010.

Raff AngusSteers by Raff bulls win Taste Test Competition and weight gain classes

Clermont based cattle producers Eli and Michelle Vogel achieved outstanding success at the 2020 Clermont Cattlemen’s Challenge.

This competition saw a number of entries of varying breeds and crosses compete within a paddock to plate format. Five steers sired by Raff Angus bulls were entered by the Vogels.

These steers placed as follows...

  • 1st – Highest weight gain on grass
  • 3rd – Highest weight gain on grain
  • 1st – Highest overall weight gain (pen of 3 steers)
  • 1st – Taste Test Competition – MSA Index Results

The Vogels are relatively new clients to the Raff Angus program having purchased their first bulls at the last on-property sale in Queensland in 2015. However, since then they have purchased numerous bulls and rely on trust and integrity of the Raff Family in providing ‘the right type’ as most bulls have since been bought sight unseen.

Raff Angus New stud sire - Raff Fonzie K135

Raff Fonzie K135 was the last lot to sell at the Raff Family’s last on-property bull sale held at Drillham before re-locating to King Island in 2015. Selling to the McNicholl Family “Arklow” Dulacca his catalogue sale comments noted – “…Stud sire potential. We may just decide to keep this bull as his pedigree contains four of the most influential cows – Moriah 822, Blackbird 5217, Burnette M51 and Doris S128 – all of which have had a major impact in our herd…”. 4 ½ years later Fonzie K135 has crossed Bass Strait to re-join the Raff Angus breeding program on King Island.

Raff Angus Golden AnniversaryRaff Angus purchase new cow - Vermont Champagne C371 CCVC371

Her sale comments from Stephen Handbury Anvil Angus – C371, one of the original Right Time cows we purchased at the Vermont Dispersal. Anyone who has travelled to the US will know the significance of Right Time to the Angus cow herd. He was the first cow maker of the modern Angus era. Only a very limited amount of semen was ever bought into Australia and at one time I even sold a single straw for $2,600. So knowing this we chased what Right Time cows we could both here and abroad. When C371 came up in the dispersal and she was physically everything we expected we added her to our herd. At the time of writing the catalogue she has calved 9 calves all within a month of each other each spring, including her last calf that featured in our Autumn bull sale. I fully expect she will make the sale with her 10th calf at foot. Even for her age she still offers great birth weight, positive fat and fantastic net feed efficiency. If we were to continue our program she was certainly entering our donor program.
